SUNDAY AND SATURDAY: SELF-LESS-NESS

“In separateness lies the world’s great misery, in compassion lies the world’s true strength.”

The Buddha

This is a two-day exercise. For two days, try to focus only on others, and how you might help, support and bless them and allow God’s grace to flow through you to them.

These two days are not about you at all. Not even a teeny bit! They are all about you doing something for others—being in the activity of compassion and about serving others with love, kindness and tenderness.

Do something for a family member that you know will delight them. Do a job that is not yours at home just to save the other person from having to do it. Do volunteer work. Help your neighbor or community. Pay the toll for the person behind you. Find an old person living alone and do some manual labor for them, or better—do that and then spend some time visiting with them.

There are million things you can do to focus on and help others. Find them!

The purpose of these two days is for you to not think of yourself and your wants for two whole days. The more difficult you find it, the more interesting you might find the results!

Remember to do all of this with a heart full of compassion and caring for others, which means your intentions are sincere and pure. If you do it just to have others say what a saint you are, then it won’t work!

Perhaps a mantra these two days could be, “Can I do something to help you?” If they say “no”, send them love–that is doing a lot!

You may be surprised to see how different the world appears during and after these two days, and how many people are affected and how your interactions with them seem to change.
